First check whether the PDF contains text
Open the PDF in a reader and try selecting a sentence. If you can copy meaningful words, the page probably contains a text layer. If selecting only highlights a whole page image, it may be a scan. Some PDFs mix scanned and text-based pages, so check more than one page.
Use PDF to Word for text-based documents
PDF to Word exports DOCX or plain text using a self-hosted PDF engine. It accepts files up to 12 MB and 30 pages. Read the upload notice, give consent and run the conversion.
The result is intended to make content editable, not reproduce every layout exactly. Check headings, paragraph order, columns, tables, fonts and page breaks in Word or another compatible editor. For simple text extraction, TXT may be more convenient than DOCX.
Use OCR for scans
OCR PDF recognizes words from page images locally in the browser using Tesseract.js.
Recognition can still make mistakes. Check names, numbers, punctuation and reading order against the page. Never treat a confident-looking answer as proof of accuracy.
Decide what the recipient needs
Send DOCX when the next person needs to edit paragraphs. Choose TXT when formatting is unnecessary. Keep the original PDF until you have compared the output.
